Community Outreach Guidelines

Student Conservation Association (SCA) Plantwise Outreach Program Intern Requirements:

  1. The interns, as a group, will train the park docents and give their presentation/walk with the interpretive staff. Interns will receive constructive criticism on their presentation and make necessary modifications prior to any outreach with the general public.

  2. Each intern gives a one hour presentation/natives & invasives walk each week to be scheduled with park interpretive staff. It would be preferred that this scheduled talk is scheduled in a way that the intern could join his/her crew back in the field during part of the day.
    • The talk should focus on natives in the environment and the threat that invasives play in the ecosystem. Talk should include id of natives and invasives.
    • Promotion for these walks should begin at the start of the intern’s term so as to build sufficient momentum and attendance for the interpretative walks. Promotion ideas include flyers, website, park brochure, poster, podcast and news media. (See suggested promotional flyer)

  3. During their tenure, each intern will give one off-site presentation to a local community group of their choice. Each intern will be responsible for making a contact in their community and presenting at one of the organization’s monthly meetings/events.

  4. On “rainy days” when the interns cannot work in the field, they will staff a booth in the visitor’s center where they will distribute Plantwise material and answer questions.

  5. Based on the park’s discretion, interns will present a booth and/or walk at a special event for the park (i.e. National Park week, Arbor Day, Earth Day, etc) to reach a broader audience. PlantWise is a partnership between the National Park Service, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, The Garden Club of America, National Invasive Species Council, the Student Conservation Association and many others to educate the public and communities about best management practices to prevent harmful invasive plants from invading parklands and natural areas.
